  两河流域的人们,通过对月亮圆缺变化规律的观察,制定了太阴历。一年分为12个月,每月以刚刚露出月牙来的这天为开端,以月亮最圆的一天为月中,以月亮又变成月牙的.那天为一月的终结。一年12个月中有6个月每月为30天,另6个月每月29天,全年共354天。这同地球绕行太阳一周的时间相差11天多,过两三年就要差一个月,这就叫“年日不足”,他们就设置闰月加以被充,就是第二年或三年加一个闰月,即一年有13个月。汉谟拉比在位时,由政府命令规定置闰,后来逐渐有了固定的周期。他们已经能够区分五大行星和恒星,对五大行星的运动轨道观察得相当准确。他们把星宿和诸神联系起来,星就是神,因此星的符号也就用来表示神的概念。每天有一位星神值勤,七天一轮回,所以把七天作为一周,分别用日、月、火、水、木、金、土七个星球的名称来命名。所谓“星期”,就是星的日期。后来随着科学的进步,去掉了加在星期上的迷信色彩。
