My Exciting Qingming Holiday
During the Qingming holiday this year, I had an unforgettable and exciting experience. Instead of staying at home like I usually do, my family decided to go on a road trip to explore the beautiful countryside.
We woke up early in the morning and packed our bags with snacks and drinks for the journey. As we drove through the countryside, I couldn't help but admire the stunning scenery. The fields were covered in vibrant green grass and colorful flowers were in full bloom. The air was fresh and filled with the sweet scent of nature.
Our first stop was a picturesque village nestled among rolling hills. The village was like something out of a fairytale, with traditional houses made of stone and wooden beams. We took a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets, admiring the old architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The villagers were friendly and greeted us warmly, making us feel right at home.
Next, we visited a local farm where we had the chance to pick our own fruits and vegetables. It was such a fun and educational experience. I picked ripe strawberries and juicy tomatoes, enjoying the satisfaction of harvesting my own food. We also learned about organic farming practices and the importance of sustainable agriculture. It made me appreciate the hard work that goes into producing the food we eat every day.
In the afternoon, we headed to a nearby river for a picnic. We found a shady spot under a big tree and spread out our picnic blanket. We enjoyed a delicious homemade lunch while listening to the soothing sound of the flowing river. After eating, we went for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear water. It was so invigorating and relaxing at the same time.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back home. I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude for the wonderful time I had with my family. This Qingming holiday was truly special and filled with joy and adventure. I realized that sometimes stepping out of our comfort zone and exploring new places can lead to the most memorable experiences.

My Reflective Qingming Holiday
During the Qingming holiday this year, I had a quiet and reflective experience. Instead of going on a trip or engaging in exciting activities, I decided to spend my time in solitude and contemplation.
I started the holiday by visiting my grandparents' graves. Qingming is a time for paying respects to our ancestors, and it was important for me to honor and remember my loved ones. I cleaned the tombstones and offered flowers and incense as a sign of reverence. While standing in front of the graves, I couldn't help but think about the legacy they left behind and the values and traditions they passed down to our family. It was a solemn moment of remembrance and gratitude.
Afterwards, I went to a nearby park to enjoy some quiet time in nature. I found a peaceful spot under a cherry blossom tree and sat down to read a book. The gentle breeze and the whispering of leaves provided a soothing background soundtrack for my thoughts. As I immersed myself in the pages of the book, I reflected on the meaning of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. It was a moment of introspection and self-discovery.
In the following days, I took the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and spend quality time with my family. We shared stories, laughter, and good food, creating new memories together. I also used this time to pursue my hobbies and interests, such as painting and playing the piano. Engaging in these activities helped me find inner peace and joy.
Additionally, I made a conscious effort to disconnect from technology and social media. Instead of constantly checking my phone or scrolling through endless feeds, I focused on being present in the moment. I realized how much time and energy I had been wasting on mindless scrolling, and I felt a sense of liberation by freeing myself from the constant distractions.
Overall, my reflective Qingming holiday allowed me to pause and appreciate the simple joys in life. It reminded me to be grateful for the present moment and to cherish the relationships and experiences that truly matter. Sometimes, taking a step back from the busyness of life can lead to a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Qingming Festival, also known as Pure Brightness Festival or Tomb-sweeping Day, is one of the 24 segments of the Chinese calendar. It normally falls on the 4th or 5th of April, between spring plowing and summer weeding, and is a time to pay respects to one's ancestors and to tidy their gravesite. Qingming Festival is when Chinese people visit the graves or burial grounds of their ancestors. Traditionally, people brought a whole rooster with them to the graves visited but the occasion has become less formal over time. The festival originated from Hanshi Day (寒食节, literally, Day with cold food only), a memorial day for Jie Zitui (介子推). Jie Zitui died in 636 BC in the Spring and Autumn Period. He was one of many followers of Duke Wen of Jin before he became a duke. Once, during Wen's 19 years of exile, they had no food and Jie prepared some meat soup for Wen. Wen enjoyed it a lot and wondered where Jie had obtained the soup. It turned out Jie had cut a piece of meat from his own thigh to make the soup. Wen was so moved he promised to reward him one day. However, Jie was not the type of person who sought rewards. Instead, he just wanted to help Wen to return to Jin to become king. Once Wen became duke, Jie resigned and stayed away from him. Duke Wen rewarded the people who helped him in the decades, but for some reason he forgot to reward Jie, who by then had moved into the forest with his mother. Duke Wen went to the forest, but could not find Jie. Heeding suggestions from his officials, Duke Wen ordered men to set the forest on fire to force out Jie. However, Jie died in the fire. Feeling remorseful, Duke Wen ordered three days without fire to honour Jie's memory. The county where Jie died is still called Jiexiu

On each Qingming Festival, all cemeteries are crowded with people who came to sweep tombs and offer sacrifices. Traffic on the way to the cemeteries becomes extremely jammed. The customs have been greatly simplified today. After slightly sweeping the tombs, people offer food, flowers and favorites of the dead, then burn incense and paper money and bow before the memorial tablet.
This is the most important day of sacrifice. Both the Han and minority ethnic groups at this time offer sacrifices to their ancestors and sweep the tombs of the diseased. Also, they will not cook on this day and only cold food is served.
