The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival that is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. It is a time when people honor the great poet and statesman Qu Yuan and ward off evil spirits. Here is how my family and I celebrate this special occasion.

On the morning of the Dragon Boat Festival, my parents and I wake up early to prepare for the day's festivities. We clean our house and decorate it with colorful ornaments and paintings of dragons and boats. These decorations are believed to bring good luck and protect us from evil spirits.

After the house is all set, we head to the kitchen to make zongzi, a traditional Chinese food eaten during this festival. Zongzi are sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, filled with different ingredients such as beans, meat, or nuts. My favorite zongzi is the one with red bean paste filling.

While my mom and I prepare the zongzi, my dad starts to set up a miniature dragon boat in our backyard. He attaches a small dragon head and tail to a long wooden boat and paints it in bright colors. This dragon boat will be used in a race later in the day.

Once everything is ready, we invite our friends and neighbors to join us in the celebration. We gather at a nearby river where the dragon boat race takes place. The race is the highlight of the festival, as teams compete against each other to paddle the fastest and win the race. The dragon boat is beautifully decorated, and the rhythmic sound of the paddles hitting the water fills the air.

After the race, we return home to enjoy a feast of delicious food. Besides zongzi, we also have other traditional dishes such as sticky rice cakes, steamed buns, and salted duck eggs. We share stories and laughter while enjoying the meal together.

In the afternoon, we engage in various activities to celebrate the festival. We play traditional games like tug-of-war, shuttlecock kicking, and making and wearing colorful silk threads. These activities bring joy and laughter to everyone, young and old.

As the day comes to an end, we light incense and burn joss paper to pay respect to Qu Yuan. We believe that these rituals will bring us good fortune and protect our family throughout the year.

Because of their admiration for Chu Yuan， the local people living adjacent to the Mi Lo River rushed into their boats to search for him while throwing rice into the waters to appease the river dragons.

　　Although they were unable to find Chu Yuan，their efforts are still commemorated today during the Dragon Boat Festival.
