原文:
余性顓愚,知志乎古,而不知宜于时;常思以泽及斯民为任。凡世所谓巧取而捷得者,全管丕知其径术,以故与经纳之士相背而趋,终无遇合。退而强学,栖迟山陇之间,虽非有苦,而亦未尝有乐也。
年已晚幕,始为博士①于黟。博士之官,卑贫无势,最为人所贱简。而黟、歙邻近,歙尤多英贤,敦行谊,重交游。一时之名隽多依余以相劘切,或抗论今时之务,注念生人之欣戚,慨然太息,相对而歌。盖余生平之乐,无以加于此矣。
程子易田,尤所称著材宿彦,亦旦夕相从。其所为诗歌,摅词朴直而寄兴深至,尝谓其有陶潜之风。易田固信余,余亦甚重易田也。虽然,余老矣,今年年七十有三,将归休于枞阳江上。而易田年逾四十,犹困于诸生②;家又贫,故里不足以自活,亦将糊其口于汝阴。念欲长与诸君子游处,不可得矣。
居稽也,弦诵也,欣欣而忘其倦也。欢聚未几离散随之余于此共犹能独乐焉否耶夫以生平未尝有乐之人徒以与诸君子游处而乐今复以聚之不常而不乐生焉。回忆独居时,虽无所乐,而亦非有不乐也。则是今日之不乐,由前日之乐而来也。夫造物之于人,安能使其长乐哉?因取易田之诗所谓“濠上吟③”者,反复咀吟,益叹其文章之古,与其人之心貌相称。属其板刻之,以与四方之知言者共读焉。而余为序之如此。

我生性愚昧无知,知道笃信古道,却不知道迎合时俗;时常惦记着把施恩于百姓作为自己的重任。凡是世人所谓投机取巧、行走捷径而取得成功,我都不知道他们取得成功的路径和方法,因此我与达官贵人相背而行,最终没有遇到志趣相投的人(或“遇到赏识自己的人”)。隐退而努力学习,游息山野之间,虽然不是有过痛苦,但也不曾有过快乐的。
我年龄已进入暮年,才开始在黟县担任博士。博士的官位卑下,生活贫穷而没有权势,最为人所轻视、怠慢。而黟、歙邻近,歙县多有英才贤士,注重品行和道义,重视结交朋友。一时的俊杰大多依傍我而相互切磋砥砺,有时高谈当今的事务,挂念生民的忧乐,不禁感慨叹息,面对面歌咏。大概我平生的快乐,没有什么可超过这个了。
程君易田,尤其被人称赞为著材宿彦(德才兼备之士),也早晚跟随着我。他所写的诗歌,措辞朴实而寄寓深远,我曾说他有陶潜的.遗风。易田执意尊奉我,我也非常器重易田。虽然这样,我毕竟老了,今年我年龄已七十三岁了,将归乡隐居在枞阳江边。而易田年龄已过四十,却仍然被困在生员(秀才)之列;且家里又贫困,在家乡不足以养活自己,也将到汝阴谋生。心想长期与诸位君子相处,是不可获得的。
共同居住共同研讨,一边弦歌一边诵读,欣欣然而忘记了疲倦。欢聚不久,离散随之而来,我在此大概还能独自快乐吗,不能吗?由于平生未曾有过相处快乐的人,只是因为与诸君子相处而快乐,如今却又因为相聚不能恒久而心生不快乐。回忆独自生活的时候,虽然没有什么快乐,但也没有什么不快乐。然而今日的不快乐,是由昔日的快乐而招来的。那造物主对于人,又怎么能使他长期快乐呢?于是,拿来易田的题名为“濠上吟”的诗集,反复咀嚼吟诵其诗,更加赞叹其文章之古朴,与其人之心灵、容貌相符合。我叮嘱他将其诗作板刻成集,用来与四方的知音一起诵读(或“而与四方的知音一起诵读它”)。而我为他的诗集作这样的序。
