Ladies and gentlemen,
Today, I am honored to stand before you to talk about the significance of Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year. As one of the most important traditional festivals in China, Spring Festival carries deep cultural meaning and brings people together in celebration.
Firstly, Spring Festival is a time for family reunion. In Chinese culture, family is highly valued, and Spring Festival is the perfect occasion for family members to gather and spend quality time together. People travel from different parts of the country, or even from abroad, to return to their hometowns and reunite with their loved ones. This tradition not only strengthens family bonds but also serves as a reminder of the importance of cherishing and appreciating our relationships.
Secondly, Spring Festival is a time for reflection and renewal. It marks the end of the lunar year and the beginning of a new one. It is a time for people to reflect on the past year, express gratitude for the blessings received, and set goals for the future. Many people take this opportunity to clean their homes, symbolizing the removal of bad luck and the welcoming of good fortune. It is also common to make New Year's resolutions, focusing on personal growth and improvement.
Furthermore, Spring Festival is a time for cultural preservation. Throughout the festival, various traditional customs and activities are carried out, such as dragon and lion dances, lantern festivals, and the exchange of red envelopes filled with money. These traditions not only showcase the rich cultural heritage of China but also serve as a means of passing down traditions and values from one generation to the next. By actively participating in these activities, we ensure that our cultural identity remains strong and vibrant.
Lastly, Spring Festival is a time for joy and celebration. The festive atmosphere during this period is infectious, with vibrant decorations, lively parades, and fireworks lighting up the sky. People exchange greetings and well-wishes, hoping for a prosperous and auspicious year ahead. It is a time for laughter, good food, and the enjoyment of various traditional delicacies. This celebration brings people together, fostering a sense of community and unity.
In conclusion, Spring Festival holds immense significance in Chinese culture. It serves as a reminder of the importance of family, a time for reflection and renewal, a means of cultural preservation, and a time for joy and celebration. As we embrace this festival, let us appreciate and embrace our cultural heritage, strengthen our relationships, and strive for a prosperous and fulfilling year ahead.

These celebrations not only bring joy to Chinese communities but also allow people from different cultural backgrounds to learn and appreciate the customs and traditions of China.
Secondly, Spring Festival has become an economic powerhouse. The festival is not only a time for cultural celebration but also a high season for consumption. The Chinese tradition of giving red envelopes filled with money, also known as "hongbao," has transformed into digital red envelopes in the era of mobile payments. This practice has led to a surge in online transactions and boosted the economy during the festival period. Furthermore, the travel rush, known as "Chunyun," during Spring Festival drives tourism and stimulates economic growth, both domestically and internationally.
Furthermore, Spring Festival has become a bridge for cultural exchange. As more people across the world become interested in Chinese culture, Spring Festival provides a platform for cultural exchange and understanding. Through participating in traditional activities such as dragon and lion dances or trying traditional Chinese cuisine, people from different cultural backgrounds can gain a deeper appreciation for the values and customs of China. This cultural exchange fosters mutual respect, tolerance, and friendship among different nations.
Lastly, Spring Festival has become a symbol of unity and harmony. In a world that often faces conflicts and divisions, the celebration of Spring Festival promotes unity and harmony among people. It transcends cultural boundaries and brings people together in the spirit of joy and celebration. Chinese New Year is the most important festivity for the Chinese people. It is also called the Spring Festival or the Lunar New Year.
Every year has an animal’s name. These animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. A Chinese legend says that these twelve animals had a race. The first year was named after the rat, the winner. The other eleven years were named after the order in which the animals arrived in the race. The clever rat jumped onto the ox’s back then at the end jumped over the ox’s head to arrive first!
The Chinese believe that a person born in a particular year has some of the characteristics of animal.
On Chinese New Year’s Eve all family members enjoy a big, delicious meal. It is very important for the Chinese to be with their families on this occasion. Fish is always part of the dinner because it represents abundance.
On New Year’s Day all Chinese children wear new clothes with bright colors. Red is considered a lucky color. Parents and relatives give children the traditional New Year’s gift called lucky money. This money is put into bright red and gold envelopes. Fill under the pillow. in the morning of new year , the kid wakes up to see the “lucky money”, exprethat oneself become one year older. Red is a traditional color for festivals, celebrations, weddings and birthdays.
The lion dancers are always part of the festivities. The lion has a big head and long body made of cloth. The lion dance is accompanied by drums, cymbals and noisy firecrackers. According to ancient traditions the great noise frightens away evil spirits.

Will Christmas Replace the Spring Festival?
Christmas arouses increasing attention year by year in China. Christmas cards become popular with students. People hold Christmas parties and exchange Christmas girts. A lot or TV and radio programs about Christmas are on. Meanwhile the Spring Festival is less appealing to youngsters. Thus some people wonder whether Christmas will replace the Spring Festival.
This worry is fairly unnecessary. Why ? One reason lies that Christmas only affects Christians, college students and joint-venture workers. Another reason is that Christmas is mostly celebrated in cities. Few people in countryside show extreme interest in this exotic festival. By contrast, the Spring Festival is the most influential traditional festival in every family.
I think,it is natural that with increasing exchanges with the West,a lot of Western holidays have b
een gradually introduced into China. For us Chinese we should never neglect or even discard our own traditional festivals. For centuries Chinese have observed this traditional holiday to welcome the beginning of a new year. And we will treasure the Spring Festival forever.

January first. The beginning of a new year. As far back in history as we can tell, people have celebrated the start of a new year.
The people of ancient Egypt began their new year in summer. That is when the Nile River flooded its banks, bringing water and fertility to the land. The people of ancient Babylonia and Persia began their new year on March twenty-first, the first day of spring. And, some Native American Indians began their new year when the nuts of the oak tree became ripe. That was usually in late summer.
Now, almost everyone celebrates New Year's Day on January first. Today, as before, people observe the New Year's holiday in many different ways.
The ancient Babylonians celebrated by forcing their king to give up his crown and royal clothing. They made him get down on his knees and admit all the mistakes he had made during the past year.
This idea of admitting wrongs and finishing the business of the old year is found in many societies at new year's. So is the idea of making resolutions. A resolution is a promise to change your ways. To stop smoking, for example. Or to get more physical exercise.
Noise-making is another ancient custom at the new year. The noise is considered necessary to chase away the evil spirits of the old year. People around the world do different things to make a lot of noise. They may hit sticks together. Or beat on drums. Or blow horns. Or explode fireworks.
Americans celebrate the New Year in many ways.
Most do not have to go to work or school. So they visit family and friends. Attend church services. Share a holiday meal. Or watch new year's parades on television. Two of the most famous parades are the Mummer's Parade in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. Both have existed for many years.
Americans also watch football on television on New Year's Day. Most years, university teams play in special holiday games.
For those who have been busy at work or school, New Year's may be a day of rest. They spend the time thinking about, and preparing for, the demands of the new year.
